The Small Farms Association (SFA) is a not-for-profit organisation representing small farmers across the UK.
The association was formed in 1997 by a group of farmers who were frustrated by the reluctance of the major farming unions to recognise the concerns and support the needs of the small farmer in their policies and activities.
The Small Farms Association welcomes everyone who is interested in the conservation of the countryside, particularly those who manage their farms in traditional and organic systems.
From very small beginnings (six farmers meeting at Exeter Market) the organisation has grown in size and influence since its establishment and now represents small farmers across the UK from its base at Ley Coombe near the town of Modbury in the South Hams, South Devon.
The SFA Committee is the organisation's governing body. Since the establishment of the organisation in 1997, the Committee has met on a monthly basis and holds its Annual General Meeting each autumn, generally in October or November.
A Chairman, Vice-chair, Treasurer and committee members are elected in accordance with the Constitutional Rules. The Committee Members are nominated annually when positions becoming available either through resignation or the end of a term of office, and their candidacy is ratified at the AGM.
The Committee has the power to determine general policy and appoint sub-committees to help it discharge its duties to the members. Copies of the minutes of Committee Meetings are available on request from the office.
The Chairman is Philip Hosking, one of the founder members. The Vice-Chairman is David Johns and the Hon. Treasurer is David Trigger.
